last pre-trip post

There is one more thing I want to write before I depart.

Last semester I took a class on nature writing with Professor Samuel Pickering. My professor was an incredible man who truly revitalized my perspective on school and everything about the world we live in. His 8 am lectures taught me that it's most important to laugh and reflect on the small moments and details of your life. Pickering's intense appreciation for both nature and people has made a lasting impression on me. I hope I can capture just some of the insatiable enthusiasm he has.

After class one day I told him I would be studying in Australia in the fall, and this is what he said,
"Jessica, heres what you do, when you get to Australia, buy a travel book and you go and travel and you'll have a wonderful time, but there's one problem. You'll have to make a decision between school and living. At Uconn, you work hard and get good grades, but in Australia, you'll have to choose to live."

Happenin Happenings

Bebopin and scattin' goes down under! This will be the first post of my fresh, new travel blog! There's just one more week before my trip begins. I will be traveling to California, New Zealand, and Australia. I am staying with family, friends, farms, and finally settling in Brisbane where I will be studying abroad for the fall semester. I won't be back until November, but I'll be keeping this blog to stay in touch. I have so many plans and ideas for this trip, but above all I hope to keep these goals in mind throughout my time abroad:
  1. Meet interesting people, whom with I will share kindness, insight, humor
  2. Become a local in a foreign land
  3. Explore and learn everyday
Heres to hoping for the best!

no bagel no bagel no bagel

A few weekends Steve and I journeyed up to North Hampton, MA for a neo-hippie gathering of sorts.  The attraction was the trance jam band, The Disco Biscuits. The scene up there is different and I like it but could never take it seriously.  We ate some dank za, drank some booze, and boogied the night away. Heres a look at the mesmerizing lights.

these pretzels are making me thirsty

Last friday was a super fun day for Hayley and I.  After my first week of school and Hayley's last week of vacation, we found ourselves both sufficiently bored.  We decided that a bit of boardin' was just what the doctor ordered.  So Thursday night Hayley and the always awesome, Chris Burke came by with some beers and a hunger for wings. As I was newly 21, Hayley, Chris and myself decided to ventured down the road to the local bar, the Bidwell Tavern, home to incredible wings and 2 dollar drafts on monday nights.  Unbeknown to us we also discovered that the Bidwell is home to the world's rudest waitress.  With Hayley trying to pass as a 25 year old New Yorker, it was lucky we even got served, but I think we may have been better off staying home watching the Office than putting up with the bad attitude of a waitress with even worse hair.  Burke overtipped the bitch cause hes such a nice dude and is hoping for better service next time around. One good thing did come from this, I finally awakened my tastebuds to the glory of bidwell wings! We made our way home with a ride from boyfriend Steve.  Hayley tried out the house moon bounce shoes and experienced great success until she took a tipsy tumble.  Burke caught some of it on tape. We're still waiting for the footage to surface on facebook.
Morning came far to quickly.  Hayley, regretful, cursed her decision to ever leave the couch.  But we rallied fast and headed north to Mount Snow.  I took the driver seat with Hayley in the copilot, naturally, and Burke snoozing in the rear.  Pit stops included; a gas stop and Greenfield's own Shelburn Falls coffee shop.  Mount Snow greeted us with blue bird skies and warm temps in the low 30's.  Much debate arose as to whether we should boot up by the car or in the lodge.  We chose the latter, naturally.  We took to the slopes and enjoyed what by far has been the best skiing and riding conditions the season has had to offer.  Burke showed off his racer precision, Hayley tackled her first black diamond with ease, and I smiled till my face fell off.  I love friends and snow and smiles!  Some highlights from the day include; filming for Mount Snow's smash video production of, "Chairlift Confessions"(expect to see that video popping up online sometime soon, or never), also eye witness accounts of the most jersey shore snowboarding duo ever to hit the slopes dawned in white polo beanies, tees, and boards, and also Christopher's near heart attack after loosing his iphone for 4 minutes only to find it in the breast pocket of his jacket.  On top of everything, Chris and I seriously upped our jump game in the park.  All and all, I'd say this was one of the best days I have ever experienced at Mount Snow, and snowboarding in general.
The drive home was long and tiring, but a quick taco bell fix held me over with no bites going to Hayley who had been promised a taco dinner, which was later withheld.

theme song of the day: Venga Boys - We Like to Party
new lingo: "Hook It Up"
